Chapter 1

Geography - Switzerland, Pacific Ocean, new Guinea
Spiritual - father leading them in prayer during storm
Survival - small wooden butter tubs for life jackets, raft made out of 8 tubs
Animals - penguins, flamingos, agouti (native pig), lobster

Chapter 2

Botany - sugar cane
Survival - making plates, bowls and spoons from gourds; pole with sail and gunfire for emergency
Animals - monkey, shark
Ship - sail and rudder definitions

Chapter 3

Courage - Fritz with shark
Survival - turtle eggs, tree house, bridge building, fruit, ladder building

Chapter 4

Animals - flamingos, kangroo
Math - ladder construction
Family - working together, giving names for home and parts of island (maybe a geography lesson too? give names to parts of our yard?)
Spiritual - Providence Bay "in gratitude to God for delivering us safely)

Chapter 5

History - kangaroos, Captain Cook first discovered them (geography - austrailia)
Botany - European Fruit (pear, plum, peach, apple, apricot, chestnut)
Survival - fishing net, ship compass, two harpoons, telescope, hatchet
Animals - tortoise
Ship - mass, billowing sails, cannons, naming ship

Chapter 6

Survival - gardening, irrigation system, coops for birds made from gourds to tie in trees, making hives for bees
Animals - Iguana, father not wanting to be cruel to iguana, mule, buffaloe
Botany - guava tree, candleberry tree ("whose heavy berries form candle wax when boiled), Indian Rubber tree (milky sap to make boots and shoes), cocoa beans

Chapter 7

Survival - double barreled gun, mother weaving cloth from flax plants
Animal - buffulo (string in nose), malabar eagle, animal training (Carib Indian trick - smoke), baby animals (hens - 40 chicks, pigs - 7 piglets, goats-2 kids, sheep - 5 lambs, dog - 6 puppies), Onagra - wild donkey from Asia (geography!)

Chapter 8

Weather - winter rain
Tools - pick axes, chisels, hammers, iron levers, wheelbarrow
The Winter home - Grotto, salt mine, cavern

Chapter 9

Cotton!!
Spiritual - "Holiday to celebrate all the adventures we have had and how good God has been to us."
Character - competition - all were good at something, father noticing and giving special awards, special love and tenderness towars mother/wife

Jack's promis to mother - mother's love for son
Survival - babmboo for light in grotto
Geography - Malaysia
Animal - boa constrictor, eel, ostrich, bears
Survival - made a trench too roast pig
Grizzle - didn't listen, ran into marsh, snake attacked
Geography - desert, mirage

Chapter 12

Courage - Fritz shooting bear
Animals - Angora rabbit, antelope, lassoed the ostrich

Chapter 13

Cajack - canoe boat (Greenlanders made them from walrus)
Airtight swimsuit

Chapter 14

Animals - sea gulls, sea lions, elephants, walruses
Pearls!!!

Chapter 15

Spiritual - message to sailor "have faith in God. Help is near."
Animal - lion
Courage - Fritz killing lion
Death - of Flora

Chapter 16

Animals - geese, cormorant
Survival - Emily made a hut
